Adapter  - Used to allow a specific style of atomizer or cartomizer to fit onto a different style of battery. Many users prefer the vapor production of one style of atty but prefer the battery life of another style battery. This allows them to have access to both simultaneously.

Advanced Personal Vaporizer (APV) - the more advanced version of a personal vaporizer. It usually consists of a stronger battery and advanced features such as variable voltage or variable wattage.  Advanced features provide more pleasant and complete vaping.

Alternative Cigarettes - Another term for electronic cigarettes.

Analog - A slang term used for a traditional cigarette.

Analog Cigarette - A name used by e-cig users for traditional tobacco cigarettes.

APV  Advanced Personal Vaporizer - the more advanced version of a personal vaporizer. It usually consists of a stronger battery and advanced features such as variable voltage or variable wattage.  Advanced features provide more pleasant and complete vaping.

Atomizer The component of the electronic cigarette, which turns the e-liquid into vapor so it can be inhaled.

Atomizer Tank - A standard style tank with a dual-coil pre-dotted/slotted atomizer.

Atty - Shortened version or abbreviation for Atomizer.

Automatic Battery - An e-cigarette battery which automatically activates the heating element when you inhale. There is no button to activate the heating element.  An internal sensor activates the battery automatically when air is passing through.

Automatic Switch - An automatic switch is activated when the user puffs on the mouthpiece. Automatic batteries do not have a switch to operate.


Base Liquid - A liquid to which nicotine and flavoring are added create e-juice. The two most common base liquids are known as VG (vegetable glycerine) and PG (propylene glycol).

Batt - Shortened version for battery.

Battery The most important part of the electronic cigarette. This typically rechargeable component provides power to the atomizer when the user inhales on the mouthpiece. Most electronic cigarettes employ a lithium ion battery which ranges in size.

Battery Charger - The battery charger to charge an electronic cigarette. These include standard wall outlet, car and USB chargers.

BCC - Bottom coil clearomizer with coil at the bottom of the tank.  It comes with replaceable atomizer heads and gives warmer vapor, cleaner flavor and no wicking problems.

BDC Clearomizers- Bottom dual coil clearomizers provide more vapor than top coil clearomizers and better throat hit than single bottom coil clearos.

Blank -  An empty cartomizer which you can fill with a desired e-liquid.

Bottom Coil Clearomizer - Clearomizer with coil at the bottom of the tank.  It comes with replaceable atomizer heads and gives warmer vapor, cleaner flavor and no wicking problems.

Bridge – A small U or V-shaped covering on top of the heating coil of atomizers. It is usually a metal covered by an absorbent material designed to wick e-liquid from a cartridge filler to the heating element.

Burnt - Generally what people refer to when they have taken a drag on an empty cartridge.


Car Adapter - A device that connects to your USB charger so that you can charge your e-cig battery in the car.

Cart - An abbreviation for Cartridge.

Carto - A slang variation for Cartomizer.

Carto Tank - A tank that goes over a pre-punched carto.  This lets you vape longer.

Cartomizer - A combination of an atomizer and disposable cartridge. The cartomizer combines a heating element and a juice delivery system into a single unit. It is disposable and not considered to be refillable, although many users manage to do so. Cartomizers can come in a single coil, dual coil, or even a triple coil configuration. Having more than one coil has the ability to produce more vapor or the same amount twice as fast from the standard.

Cartomizer Tank - A cartomizer tank is a tube to hold e-liquid. The cartomizer is placed in the middle of the tube and has a hole punched in the bottom so that the e-liquid can feed itself into the cartomizer.

Cartridge - The unit that holds the e-liquid that are connected to the electronic cigarette. When the liquid is depleted it can either be refilled or replaced with a new pre-filled cartridge.

Carts - A shortened term for the e-cig cartridge.

CASAA - Consumer Advocacy for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association, a non-profit organization campaigning on behalf of electronic cigarette consumers.

Charger - The device used to charge your electronic cigarette battery. There are several types, including a portable wall charger, USB charger, car adapter.

Clearo - An abbreviation for Clearomizer

Clearomizer - a transparent version of a cartomizer.  It is designed to allow users to see how much e-juices they have left.  Some cleromizers have ml graduations for the capacity of e-liquid left.   A wick or wicks, are generally used for the juice delivery to the coil. There are top coil and bottom coil clearomizers.

Coil -  A coil is generally a piece of nichrome or kanthal wire that has been wrapped around a kind of wick. They heats up and vaporizes e-liquid.

Connection Type - There are different connection types used to connect the atomizers or cartomizer to the device or battery. The most common connection types are 510, 901, 808, 801.

Core - An empty cartridge to be filled with  e-liquid.

Cut / Cutting - The process of diluting e-liquid to achieve the desired nicotine level.

Cutoff - Some battery models utilize a cutoff mechanism to turn off the battery when it is overused. This protects the atomizer from burning out and the user from inhaling too much nicotine.  The automatic shutdown is a feature which happens if you take a long draw from an e-cigarette after a 5-10 second draw.  This feature prevents the atomizer/cartomizer from overheating.


DCT - Dual Coil Tank, a tank with a dual coil cartomizer inserted in the middle with pre-slots punched into the bottom, so that e-juice can feed itself into the cartomizer.

De-wick - The action of removing the wick from an atomizer.

Debridge - The action of removing the bridge (and wick) from an atomizer.

Digital Cigarette - Another name for an electronic cigarette.

Dipping - A method of adding e-liquid directly into the atomizer or fill material to refill an electronic cigarette. This can only be done with atomizers that have an exposed wick. The wick is moistened by dipping it into a small amount of e-liquid.  Then you can use the e-cigarette without a cartridge for a short period of time.

Direct Drip -  The action of dripping e-liquid directly into the atomizer instead of delivering e-liquid through a cartridge or cartomizer.

Disposable E-Cigarette - An electronic cigarette that is designed to be used only once and then disposed. The battery can not be recharged and the cartridge can not be refilled.

DIY- Do It Yourself homemade e-liquid or modification.

DNA - A small variable wattage board built for modders. The board can produce up to 12 watts and can be running in parallel to produce 24 watts.

Draw - What the smoker does on the inhale of the electronic cigarette.

Drip Shield - A round metal or plastic tube that slips over your atomizer.  If leaking occurs on your atomizer, the liquid will leak into the drip shield instead of leaking onto your personal vaporizer.

Drip Tip - Used to directly drip an e-liquid into an atomizer or into a cartomizer.  Remove the end cap and attach.  Some vapers  prefer drip tip as the soft drip tips feel more like a cigarette filter in the mouth.

Dripping – A method of adding juice to the atomizer. A user will drip a few drop directly onto the bridge before vaping.  Some users use this method to produce the best vapor and taste, since there is no filler material involved with the process.

Dry Burn - Drawing on the the atomiser when there is no cartridge and it's completely dry. This can damage your atomiser so it should be avoided.

Dry Smoking -  A method used in 3-piece electronic cigarette models when the atomizer is flooded with solution or needs to be cleared of residue. May damage the atomizer by overheating it.

Dual Coil Cartomizer - 2 coils are commonly used in tanks. Can produce twice as much vapor or the same amount of it twice as fast from the standard.

Dual Mode Battery -  A battery that has both automatic and manual mode.  It is switchable by five clicks.

E-Cig Accessories - Additional items you purchase to enhance your experience using e-cigarettes. They include chargers, extra batteries, cases and lanyards that make using e-cigarettes easier.

E-Cig - A shortened term for an electronic cigarette. Also: ECig, Digi-cig, E-Ciggy, PV.

E-Cigar  - Short for electronic cigar.  It works the same way as e-cigarette, but is made to resemble the look of a tobacco cigar.

E-Cigarette - An electronic cigarette, a battery-powered electronic device that converts a liquid nicotine or non-nicotine solution (e-liquid) into water vapor.  Many e-cigarettes resemble traditional analog cigarettes in size, shape and color, but they are also manufactured to mimic pens, cigars and pipes.

E-Juice - also known as e-liquid or e-fluid. The solution that is being vaporized for inhalation.  This is a base of propylene glycol (PG) and/or vegetable glycerin (VG) which contains (optionally) nicotine and flavorings.

eGo - A style of electronic cigarette that utilizes the 510 threads and allows to use 510 components but with a much larger battery.  Slightly larger in diameter than a mini cig with outer cone threads that are compatible with eGo threads.

eGo-T - A very popular e-cigarette battery with 510 thread.

E-Liquid - Same as e-fluid or e-juice. The solution contained in the e-cigarette cartridge and is being vaporized.

E-pipe - Works the same way as electronic cigarette but is shaped to resemble the tobacco pipe.

E-Smoke - A term used for the vapor emitted by an electronic cigarette. “E-smoking“ is the action of smoking an electronic cigarette.

Electronic Cigarette - A battery-powered electronic device that converts a liquid nicotine or non-nicotine solution (e-liquid) into a vapor.  Many electronic cigarette resemble traditional analog cigarettes in size, shape and color, but they are also manufactured to mimic pens, cigars and pipes.  Also known as: E-Cigarette, E-Cig, E-Smoke, Digital Cigarette, and Alternative Cigarettes.

Electronic Pipe - works the same way as electronic cigarette but is shaped to resemble the look of a tobacco pipe.


FDA - United States Food and Drug Administration.

Feeder -  A personal vaporizer that contains a filled bottle of e-liquid. These devices feed juice directly into the atomizer or cartomizer by squeezing the bottle.  This is used to replace dripping without compromising on flavor.

Female Thread - Some batteries have female thread battery and male thread carto.  Other batteries, like KR808D have their threads other way round.

Filament - A heating element, coil of high resistance wire that heats up and vaporizes e-liquid flowing onto it from the bridge.

Filler The fiber or wick found inside a cartridge that holds e-liquid.

Filling Material - The filling inside a cartridge or cartomizer, cotton wool type absorbent material used to store e-liquid.

Flavor Cartridge - An e-cigarette cartridge containing nicotine and various flavors.

Flooding – The situation that can occur when too much juice is applied to the atomizer. Because the atomizers require some air to properly vaporize e-liquid, adding too much juice to an atomizer will cause a decrease in vapor production and flavor.


Gen - An abbreviation for Genesis.

Genesis - A type of rebuildable tank atomizer for advanced vapers.  Genesis uses oxidized stainless steel as a wick instead of the more common fiber glass wick.

Glycerine - A sweet-tasting liquid commonly used in food production. It is often used as a base liquid for e-juices.


Heating Coil - A piece of nichrome or kanthal that is wrapped around a wick.  Current flows through the coil, the coil gets hot, and vaporizes the e-liquid.

Hit - The inhale of vapor.

High Resistance (HR)  -  An atomizer or cartomizer with a higher Ohm rating than the standard device.  This will allow the user to apply higher voltage to the coil.  Higher resistance of atomizer causes slower heating of filament.

HR - An atomizer or cartomizer with a higher Ohm rating than the standard device.  Higher resistance of atomizer causes slower heating of filament.


Juice - E-Liquid, E-Juice, or Smoke Juice. This is the liquid that is vaporized when using an electronic cigarette.


Kick - This term describes the feeling in the throat when an inhalation of vapor reaches that spot.

Kanthal - One of two types of resistance wire used for a heating coil in either an atomizer or cartomizer. The other is Nichrome.


Leaking – This can happen when too much e-juice is added to an atomizer or cartomizer. Juice can leak out of the bottom of the heating element and onto the battery, which in some cases can cause damage to the device.

LED - The end of most electronic cigarettes contains a light for a realistic effect and to alert the user when the battery needs recharging.  LED lights glow substantially brighter than others, and require less energy to do so.

Light Emitting Diode  (LED) A diode that converts applied voltage to light. These are commonly used in electronic cigarette devices to indicate that the device is actively being used.

Li-on - An abbreviation for lithium ion batteries.

Liquid - E-Liquid, E-Juice, Smoke Juice, or Juice. This is the liquid that is vaporized when using an electronic cigarette.

Lithium Ion Batteries - Considered the strongest and most powerful batteries in the electronic cigarette market.

Low Resistance An atomizer or cartomizer with a lower Ohm rating than the standard equipment. This generally causes the heating element to get hotter faster and produces vapor more quickly. In many cases it produces more vapor than an atty or carto that has a standard resistance rating.

LR - Abbreviation for low resistance.


mAh - milliampere-hour,  a sub-unit of ampere-hour which is a unit of electric charge (referred to the battery capacity).

Manual - A style of electronic cigarette battery that has a button (usually on the top or side of the battery) that activates the heating element. When the user wishes to use the device, the button must first be depressed in order to produce vapor from the atomizer.

Manual Battery - A style of battery that has a button near the top, at the side of the battery and it needs to be pressed to enable a vape, unlike automatic style battery.

Mechanical Mod - a personal vaporizer with no wires. All the current flows through parts of the device, usually the outer casing, allowing for a very high current flow.

Mesh - The cover of the atomiser bridge typically made of a metal mesh material, stainless steel for example.

Micro - A micro-type e-cigarette 50mm - 99mm long.  A compromise between physical size and liquid capacity or battery life. These generally look more like a traditional cigarette, but are still slightly larger. Mini cartridges vary greatly, but usually contain between .5mL to 1mL of e-liquid.

Microcoil/Micro-Coil - A coil for RBA/RDA that is wrapped around the wick.

Mini - A small version of an e-cigarette, ranging in size from 116mm - 139mm.

Mini E-cigarette - An electronic cigarette of about 102-103mm length, which can fit in PCC for recharging (Portable charging case).

Microprocessor - The part of the e-cigarette battery that is responsible for controlling the heater and the indicator LED light.

Milligrams - The unit of measure for how much nicotine is in a cartridge.

Mg Strength - A measurement denoting the strength of the nicotine level in an e-liquid.

Mod - A modification done to a regular e-cigarette or completely homemade e-cigarette device, or design alteration of a manufactured battery, atomizer or cartridge. Mods are generally done by e-smokers looking to increase vapor production, battery life or ease of use.

Modification - A modification to a device or accessory (to get the existing features improved) or a design variation, normally done by manufacturers.

Mouthpiece - The tip of an electronic cigarette which is placed into the mouth. It often looks like a cigarette butt. This part contains the cartridge in a 3-piece model. The 2-piece models contain the cartridge and the atomizer.


Nichrome - One of the two main types of resistance wire used for the heating coil in an atomizer or cartomizer. The other is Kanthal.

Nicotine - The substance used in traditional and electronic cigarettes.

Nicotine Level - The amount of nicotine present in a cartridge or a bottle of e-liquid. It is usually measured in mg/ml. The designated amount of nicotine per cartridge.

Nicotine Liquid - The nicotine solution contained in the cartridge that is vaporized in the e-cigarette.

Nicotine Strength - There are various nicotine levels in e-liquids or cartridges:  in the range 0-24mg (usually 0-6-12-18-24mg)

No-Resistance Wire - The heating coils in some rebuildable atomizer (RBA) installs require no-resistance wire leads to be attached. They allow for current to get to the heating coil through them, but the portion that is no-resistance will not get hot. The two types that are generally used are silver and nickel.


Ohm - A measure of electrical resistance. A lower number indicates lower resistance and therefore faster heating.


Passthrough (PT) - Unlike batteries, the pass-through plugs into a USB port on your computer to allow you to vape without worrying about the battery life. They also run at a higher voltage so you often get warmer vapor and increased throat hit from them. You can also use a PT with a portable USB power supply or a USB power adapter, as long as they are compatible.

PCC - Abbreviation for Personal Charging Case.

Pen-Style - A style of an electronic cigarette, known for its resemblance to a ball point pen and/or a cigarette holder. These are the first type of electronic cigarette created and range in size from 140mm - 160mm.  Pen-style type e-cigarette is 140mm - 160mm long. Pen-style name comes from the ballpoint pen-like appearance. Can also be called Classic or Standard.

Personal Charging Case (PCC) - A case with a built-in battery that is designed to hold and charge e-cigarettes. It is slim and compact, and has the ability to fit into a pocket. It gets its power from being charged at home, and then charges your batteries without needing an outlet nearby.  is a case where you can store and carry with some cartridges and atomizers and it will also re-charge your e-cigarette batteries on the go. With one charge of the PCC unit itself you can usually fully charge up to 3 or 4 e-cigarette batteries.

Personal Vaporizor (PV) Another name for an Electronic Cigarette. Usually used in reference to the more non-traditional style e-cigs.

Pipe Style - An electronic cigarette that looks like a pipe. It has big cartridges, but blanks aren't quite as readily available as the rest of the styles. The cartridges hold more than 2mL of e-liquid at a time.

PG – Abbreviation for Propylene Glycol.

Priming - A puffing technique used on automatic batteries to produce the most vapor. This requires taking a deep inhale to "warm up" the atomizer. Once warmed, the battery is primed.

Propylene Glycol (PG) -  A substance used in some e-cigarette liquids.  It's the most commonly used base carrier for nicotine and flavor solutions for electronic cigarettes. Propylene Glycol has been deemed generally safe to be used in medical products as well as food products for general consumption.

Portable Charging Case - A case that allows you to charge your battery on the go, no need for a power source like a computer or wall adapter. Usually can also hold a couple of cartomizers/cartridges.

PT - An e-cigarette with USB charger that plugs directly into a a USB port to provide constant power to the device.

PV - Personal Vaporizer, another commonly used term for an electronic cigarette device.

Primer-puff Primer-puff is a quick puff to start the atomizer heating before the actual draw. This will increase the amount of vapor and throat-hit.

Puff - The action the smoker uses on an electronic cigarette to get a hit.

Pull - Also known as the draw, or hit. The draw you take from your electronic cigarette. What the smoker does to get the vapor hit from the e-cigarette.

Pyrex Glass the material of which bodies of some clearomizers are made.  It's a clear, low-thermal-expansion glass. Also used for laboratory glassware, kitchenware and in reflective optics in astronomy applications.


RBA - An abbreviation for Rebuildable Atomizer.

Rebuildable Atomizer - Rebuildable Atomizers vary in design.  Some have a fabric wick, while some stay more pure from burning elements and use stainless steel mesh and kanthal wire.  Some incorporate a tank for holding e-liquid.

Resistance Wire - What the heating coil is made of.  Two types are generally used, Kanthal and Nichrome.


Sensor - The part of the e-cigarette battery that detects when the user has taken a drag.

Smart Chip - A computer chip located within the e-cigarette battery that allows it to function.

Smokeless Cigarette – A term used to refer to an electronic cigarette. This term is used commonly due to the fact that no actual smoke is inhaled or exhaled while using an e-cig.

Standard Resistance - A standard resistance atomizer is 2.5 ohm, cartomizer 3.0 ohm.

Starter Kit - A set that comes with all the necessary components to begin using e-cigarettes. A starter kit can contain anything from the basics (battery and charger) to a complete assortment of parts and accessories.

Super Mini Super Mini-type e-cigarette is 100mm - 115mm long. Its also sometimes called just the "Super". Frequently almost the same size as a traditional cigarette, this hardware has smaller capacity cartridges and batteries.


Tank - A container that holds a substantial amount of liquid, generally clear so the amount is visible.

Taryn Spin - Using centrifugal force to fill a cartomizer.

TH - Abbreviation for Throat Hit.

Threading - The screw-end of your e-cig battery, where the cartridge attaches. Threading can also refer to the battery type.

Throat Hit (TH) - Throat-hit means the sensation in the back of your throat when you inhale the vapor e-cigarette produces. Some e-liquids and e-cigarettes produce a strong throat hit but some you can barely notice. High nicotine content e-liquids usually give the most intense throat-hit.

Topping off - Adding few drops of e-liquid into a cartridge.


USB Charger -  An e-cigarette battery charger that lets you charge by connecting the battery to your computer's USB port

USB-passthru / USB-passthrough - USB-passthrough cable is connected to a USB port of a computer, portable power source and a atomizer is connected to the other end of the cable. This allows continuous power supply for the e-cigarette. Pass-throughs are available for almost every type of e-cigarette.


Vape - The act of inhaling vapor from an electronic cigarette.

Vaper - The user of an electronic cigarette, a person who vapes.

Vaping - Using an electronic cigarette.  Smoker smokes cigarettes, vaper vapes e-cigarettes.  Power is supplied to the heating element which vaporizes the e-liquid and vapor is then taken into the lungs and provides the sensation of smoking along with nicotine if it is present in the e-liquid.

Vapor -  The smoke-like vapor produced from an electronic cigarette when e-liquid is turned to a mist by the atomizer. This vapor is a pure food grade version similar to the smoke produced by a fog machine. The most common ingredient is propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin.

Vapor Cigarette - A term used to refer to an electronic cigarette. This term is used commonly due to the water vapor that is exhaled when using an electronic cigarette.

Vapor drop-off - A situation where the amount of vapor produced by the e-cigarette is significantly reduced. This may be due to a dry cartridge, low battery, worn or broken atomizer.

Vapor Production - The amount of vapor the e-cigarette creates.

Vapor Smoking - The act of using an e-cigarette.

Vaporizer - The electronic component which turns an e-liquid into a gas or a vapor. This is also another term used for an electronic cigarette.

Variable Voltage - Variable Voltage (VV) allows you to control how many volts your device will produce. With a variable voltage e-cig, you have the ability to dial in the voltage by a click of a button or sequence. A typical voltage range for variable voltage is 3.0volts – 6.0volts and VV devices can change these volt settings in .01 increments.

Variable Wattage - Variable Wattage (VW) allows you to control how many watts your device will produce. Variable wattage will allow you to set the wattage, no matter what resistance atomizer or cartomizer you use with the device. Variable Power (VP) is also used to describe variable wattage.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG) - A safe, all-natural substance derived from plant oils. It is the base of our e-cigarette juice, and serves to hold the nicotine. It imparts a rather sweet taste, and creates exceptional vapor.

Vent Holes -Vent holes appear on the bottom of electronic cigarettes and mods. These holes allow battery gases to vent in the event of a battery failure.

VG - Abbreviation for Vegetable Glycerol or Vegetable Glycerin.

Voltage - Volts are supplied to the atomizer/cartomizer from the battery. Most devices, such as the eGo supply approximately 3.7V. High voltage devices can supply between 5-6 volts. Variable Voltage devices allow you to adjust the output voltage. This varies between devices, but usually somewhere between 3V up to 6V. Multi-voltage devices provide pre-determined voltage setting. For example, a low setting could be 3.7V, a medium setting could be 4.5V, a high setting could be 6V.


Watt - A measurement of power which is the function of the voltage of your electronic cigarette or mod and the resistance of your atomizer or cartomizer.

Wick - A poly fiber with the appearance of cotton. Usually a silica thread that soaks up e-liquid to be vaporized by the heating element.

Wicking - The process by which e-liquid is drawn from the cartridge into the atomizer coil.


Xmg - The general way of displaying the amount of nicotine in e-liquid seems to be milligrams in milliliter but originally this meant how many milligrams of nicotine per gram is in the e-liquid.


Zero Nicotine - A term to designate e-liquid with absolutely no nicotine added.
